Have you ever wondered why Summer smells so damn good? It is undoubtedly the most fragrant season of them all thanks to the sunny rays which release essential oils from petals, fruits, leaves and grasses through the extreme heat. Hate it or love it, summer brings with it much more than its warmth and bursts of fragrance. It can deliver an influx of insects into your home or leave you with a nasty sunburn. Lucky for you, we have a few must- try essential oil solutions to help you get through this glorious summer.
Keep the mosquitos, flies and other unsightly summer creepy crawlies at bay with this potent blend. You can diffuse this blend or add it to 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil and apply to arms and legs* or even combine it with water in a glass spritz bottle (shake well before use).
1 drop Lemongrass
2 drops Lemon
2 drops Tea Tree
*Always do a skin patch first. Do not use if you have sensitive skin (or omit the lemongrass). Avoid exposure to sunlight 12 hours after application.
Soothe Insect Bites
Mozzies got ya? Lavender & Tea Tree to the rescue! This clever combination is first aid in a bottle. Simply wet a cotton bud or make up remover pad and apply 1 drop of Springfields Lavender & Tea Tree to relieve itchiness and swelling. Apply to the affected area only.
Cooling Foot Bath
Being on your feet all day during summer can have you wondering where your ankles went (medically diagnosed as “kankles”). This cooling foot bath is designed to draw out the heat while reducing swelling and promoting circulation. Simply add the blend into a foot spa, bath or stainless-steel bowl (which is reserved for your feet of course).
1 tablespoon Sweet Almond Oil
3 drops Peppermint
2 drops Roman Chamomile
1 drop Rosemary
1 drop Clary Sage
Note- this blend is not suitable for use during pregnancy.
Sunburn Recovery Gel
Unlike our younger years, we are much more educated and sun smart than we once were. Somehow, we seem to still manage to sometimes get caught out during summer. If not treated in time, the pricking pain can impact your sleep at night, gradually bubbling and then subsiding as it leaves you with snake-like peeling skin. Moral of the story? If you do get burnt, treat it in time with this child-friendly soothing blend.
1 tablespoon of Aloe Gel (preferably refrigerated) or Jojoba Oil (do not refrigerate or it will turn into a solid wax).
2 drops of Lavender
1 drop German Chamomile
P.S. The Lavender and Chamomile not only help the healing process but also help lull you into a deep sleep on a hot night.
Cleansing Diffuser Blend
Whether you’re the type to set a new year’s resolution or not, in Australia summer means a fresh start with renewed energy. Sweep away last year’s cobwebs and keep the good vibes going with this refreshing blend. It’s also great to support both mental and physical cleansing/ detoxification.
2 drops Lemon
2 drops Peppermint
2 drop Roman Chamomile
1 drop Patchouli
If there’s one essential oil we just can’t go past during summer it’s Neroli. Extracted from the flower of the Bitter Orange tree it has a subtle floral citrus-like aroma making it a well-balanced perfume. Just like the princess of Nerola in Italy all those centuries ago, wear it on its own by dabbing a couple of drops of Springfields Neroli 2.5% in Jojoba Oil on your wrists and behind the ears.
Depending on where you spend your holidays, summer might smell different to you. It may be the dry Australian bush with Eucalyptus and Lemon Myrtle or humid tropical holidays with refreshing Citrus and Lemongrass. For me, summer smells like the Adriatic coast, sea salt mixed in with Geranium, Lavender, Rosemary and Pine which grows by the seaside. Without even realising, I use these essential oils the most during summer. Why not try creating your very own personal summer blend?
