Calm and De-stress Rituals with Frankincense Oil

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) is regarded as the King of Essential Oils for good reason. Since ancient times, Frankincense has been considered a precious oil because of its powerful medicinal and grounding properties. Considered to be as valuable as gold and connected to the divine, it was often used spiritually. Its application in modern lifestyles is just as valuable in helping to establish rituals to calm and destress the mind and body.

Frankincense has a deeply captivating fresh woody aroma which is often used in perfumery. Its essential oil is steam distilled from the gum resin of the Boswellia tree, most commonly grown in Somalia. Often referred to as ‘Frankincense tears’ because of the way its sap oozes from the trees, once it hardens the precious resin is then harvested under the patrol of armed guards.

While getting your hands on a bottle of Frankincense essential oil is fairly easy these days, it’s important to treat it with the care and reverence it deserves. Reserving it for when the body, mind and soul need be brought back into alignment, we like to consciously combine Frankincense’s sedative, decongestant and antiseptic properties with mindful practice. Below are our favourite Frankie rituals that treat the sacred oil with the respect it deserves.

Meditation pulse point

We’ve all been there. You’ve made time to be still and meditate but your mind keeps wandering. Frankincense essential oil can help you let your thoughts go and turn your focus inwards. Simply combine 12mL of Sweet Almond Oil with 4 drops of Frankincense oil. Dab onto the wrists, neck and the third eye before your meditation practice beings…and breathe.

Invigorating warm oil massage

We love using massage as a way to bring awareness to the physical body while relaxing areas where we’re holding onto tension. Combine 12mL Warm Sweet Almond Oil with 2 drops of Frankincense, 2 drops of Lavender and 2 drops Patchouli. Massage over the body using long, firm strokes.

Cleansing diffuser blend

Spring cleaning is not just for the home! Clearing the cobwebs of the mind can help reinstate focus and clarity. Simply add 2 drops frankincense, 2 drops peppermint and 2 drops lemon to the water in your diffuser and get your day started!

Deep relaxation diffuser blend

If you’re anything like us, you might sometimes find yourself holding on to stress and tension that has built up during the day. A nightly ritual to consciously let go of the day is beautifully coupled with this woody diffuser blend. Add 2 drops of Frankincense, 2 drops of Australian Sandalwood and 2 drops Orange to the water in your diffuser and let the day melt away…

Soothing bath soak

Bath time= the ultimate me time! Combining Frankincense with your bath ritual can take the experience to the next level. Simply combine 1 tablespoon of Sweet Almond Oil with 2 drops of Frankincense, 2 drops of Lavender and 1 drop of Ylang Ylang. Sink in and watch the fragrant swirling mist rise up from the tub.

 

You can see why Frankincense holds an extra special place in our hearts and essential oil collections. Using it mindfully as part of a grounding ritual reminds us that it is as precious to us now as it was to our ancestors many centuries ago. Ommmmmmmm
